2 big updates wrt the deprecation of the third party cookie (as well as other things in the Privacy Sandbox Google program).
First is the release of the CMA Q4 2023 update — worth a skim, and some interesting tidbits, such as:
- It’s not necessary that there is no revenue impact to the adtech participants – if there is a road/path to revenue recovery, the CMA might approve.
- Related Web Sites (formerly same site) is limited to 5 domains — there are lots of publishers with a lot more than that. Using 3rd party cookies for pubs to track across domains will probably not be satisfied by this limited number.
- There’s lots of governance open questions, like RWS, the Topics API, etc. that are unresolved.
It seems that there are a lot of open questions — but the attitude I read in the doc seems to indicate that if ther is a path to solving them, things might move forward.
Second is the release of the iAB TechLab critique of the Privacy Sandbox — something in the works for most of 2023. I’ll read through that in a bit for some more comments.
